Precast steel–UHPC lightweight composite bridge for accelerated bridge construction

Shuwen DENG, Xudong SHAO, Xudong ZHAO, Yang WANG, Yan WANG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 2,   Pages 364-377 doi: 10.1007/s11709-021-0702-3

Abstract: In this study, a fully precast steel–ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC) lightweight composite bridge (LWCB) was proposed based on Mapu Bridge, aiming at accelerating construction in bridge engineering. Cast-in-place joints are generally the controlling factor of segmental structures. Therefore, an innovative girder-to-girder joint that is suitable for LWCB was developed. A specimen consisting of two prefabricated steel–UHPC composite girder parts and one post-cast joint part was fabricated to determine if the joint can effectively transfer load between girders. The flexural behavior of the specimen under a negative bending moment was explored. Finite element analyses of Mapu Bridge showed that the nominal stress of critical sections could meet the required stress, indicating that the design is reasonable. The fatigue performance of the UHPC deck was assessed based on past research, and results revealed that the fatigue performance could meet the design requirements. Based on the test results, a crack width prediction method for the joint interface, a simplified calculation method for the design moment, and a deflection calculation method for the steel–UHPC composite girder in consideration of the UHPC tensile stiffness effect were presented. Good agreements were achieved between the predicted values and test results.

Simultaneous acquisition of CT angiography and whole brain CT perfusion images by using multiphase dynamic helical scan on 16 MDCT

Weiwei CHEN, Jianpin QI, Wenzhen ZHU, Wenhua HUANG, Jinmei SONG

Frontiers of Medicine 2009, Volume 3, Issue 2,   Pages 230-235 doi: 10.1007/s11684-009-0023-8

Abstract: We implemented a new protocol — multiphase dynamic helical scan to acquire CT angiography (CTA) and whole brain CT perfusion (CTP) images simultaneously with single scan on 16 multidetector CT (MDCT). A total of 90 patients who were randomly assigned into 3 groups were included in our study. Each group underwent CT scan by using the new protocol, traditional CTA and CTP protocol, respectively. The image quality of CTA, the CTP parameter values and the X-ray doses were measured and compared between the new protocol and the traditional protocols. There was no statistically significant difference in the CTA image quality between the above methods ( =0.55). For CTP parameters, the new protocol tended to overestimate the blood volume (BV) and blood flow (BF) value, and to underestimate the mean transit time (MTT) value compared with the traditional method. However, there was no statistically significant difference in BV, BF, and MTT value between the two methods except permeability surface (PS) ( >0.05). The volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) of our protocol were lower than the traditional one. The new protocol can obtain valuable diagnostic information in a shorter time without significant compromise in image quality. In addition, it reduces the radiation dose as well as contrast medium usage on the patient.

Mechanisms behind the accelerated extracellular electron transfer in

Feng ZHANG,Shengsong YU,Jie LI,Wenwei LI,Hanqing YU

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 531-538 doi: 10.1007/s11783-015-0793-y

Abstract: Modification of electrode surface with carboxylic acid terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been found to be an effective approach to improve the extracellular electron transfer (EET) of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) on electrode surface, but the underlying mechanism behind such enhanced EET remains unclear. In this work, the gold electrodes modified by mercapto-acetic acid and mercapto-ethylamine (Au-COOH, Au-NH ) were used as anodes in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) inoculated with DL-1, and their electrochemical performance and the bacteria-electrode interactions were investigated. Results showed that the redox reaction occurred on the Au-NH with a higher rate and a lower resistance than that on the Au or the Au-COOH. Both the MECs with the Au-COOH and Au-NH anodes exhibited a higher current density than that with a bare Au anode. The biofilm formed on the Au-COOH was denser than that on bare Au, while the biofilm on the Au-NH had a greater thickness, suggesting a critical role of direct EET in this system. This work suggests that functional groups such as –COOH and-NH could promote electrode performance by accelerating the direct EET of EAB on electrode surface.
